Dr. Herbert Mao earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the top of his class from California State University, Long Beach. His early academic interests in biomechanics, exercise physiology, and rehabilitation led him to participate in numerous research projects focused on improving human movement and restoring function. After college, he contributed to a research initiative involving a filtration membrane designed to absorb toxic metals, a project that later received recognition at an Association for Environmental Health & Sciences conference.

Motivated by a desire to restore anatomy and optimize biomechanics, Dr. Mao pursued his medical degree at Campbell University in North Carolina, graduating with honors. During medical school, he conducted research at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center examining access to joint replacement education and care in rural communities. His experience training in underserved regions reinforced his commitment to expanding access to high-quality orthopedic care.

Dr. Mao completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Valley Orthopedic Surgery Residency in Modesto, California, a region with a significant need for orthopedic services. Throughout his training, he remained active in research and published work in The Journal of Orthopedic Experience & Innovation investigating regional disparities in orthopedic training and access to care.

Dr. Mao specializes in comprehensive joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, hip, and knee. He provides advanced treatment options for degenerative joint conditions, fracture, arthritis, and complex joint pathology, utilizing both minimally invasive and traditional surgical approaches tailored to each patient’s anatomy and goals. His expertise includes total knee replacement, total hip replacement, and shoulder replacement procedures. He is particularly focused on restoring natural joint mechanics, optimizing implant positioning using modern technology such as computer software guidance and computer tomography guidance, to improve long-term functional outcomes.

Committed to staying at the forefront of joint replacement advancements, Dr. Mao regularly participates in national conferences and continuing education through organizations such as the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and other leading orthopedic societies. His approach emphasizes evidence-based care, patient education, and individualized treatment planning.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Mao and his wife enjoy hiking, fishing, and international travel. They are passionate advocates for healthy living and promote wellness through balanced nutrition and regular exercise.
