Pain from osteoarthritis can range from manageable twinges during intense activity to debilitating pain that affects virtually every move you make. If you have difficulty standing, sitting, kneeling, rising from a chair or bed, or getting into and out of a car, it may be due to severe hip, knee, or ankle arthritis.

Most orthopedistsinitially try conservative treatments to alleviate the pain. These approaches may include anti-inflammatories, weight loss, or physical therapy. If none of these methods provides relief, it may be time to consider joint replacement.

"If your physician has optimized conservative management techniques and you’re still having more pain than you’re willing to tolerate or more functional limitations than you’re willing to accept," said Dr. Turner, "then it’s time to consider surgery."

Dr. Turner has introduced several modern surgical techniques to Cowlitz County, performing the first arthroscopic anterior cruciate reconstructionand arthroscopic shoulder surgeries at St. John Hospital. He has performed more than 7,500 surgeries during his career.
